Worship & Liturgy

The Mass is the heart of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, and it comes to life through the people who serve. From proclaiming God’s Word… to assisting at the altar… to leading music… to welcoming others through the doors, each role plays a part in creating a prayerful, beautiful, and welcoming experience for all.

Whether you’re a student looking to get involved, a lifelong parishioner, or someone just starting out, there’s a place for you at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish.

This Might Be for You If…

  • You love the Mass and want to be more involved
  • You’re looking for a meaningful way to serve
  • You enjoy being part of something bigger than yourself
  • You want to grow in confidence and faith
  • You like helping others feel welcome and at home

No experience? No problem. We’ll walk with you every step of the way. Not sure where to begin? These are great first steps:

Ways to Serve

Altar Server

A great place to start, especially for students.

Altar Serving is one of the most popular and accessible ways to get involved. Students from our Queen of the Rosary School and Religious Education program are regularly trained and quickly become confident serving at the altar. Altar Servers gain a deeper understanding of the Mass, make friends, and learn valuable leadership skills.

We provide hands-on training and easy-to-follow materials so servers feel prepared and comfortable.

Pathway Opportunity: Servers can grow into Senior Servers, helping train others, and eventually into Sacristans, leading teams and preparing for Mass.

I’m Interested. Contact the Parish Office at (847) 979-0901 or sgoranson@archchicago.org to learn about upcoming training, or download the Altar Server Permission Slip.

Lector

Help bring God’s Word to life.

Lectors proclaim Scripture at Mass, an important and meaningful role in our liturgy.

We especially encourage teens (8th grade and high school) to consider this ministry.

  • Adults complete Archdiocesan Proclaiming the Word training
  • Teens are trained in-house by experienced lectors and our clergy

I’m Interested. Contact the Parish Office at (847) 979-0901 or sgoranson@archchicago.org to learn about upcoming training, or download the Lector Overview.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Share the Body and Blood of Christ.

If you’re looking for a meaningful, reverent way to serve, this is a beautiful opportunity. This ministry is especially needed as we work toward offering Communion under both species at all Sunday Masses.

  • Must be Confirmed Catholics
  • Age 16+ (teens welcome!)

I’m Interested. Contact the Parish Office at (847) 979-0901 or sgoranson@archchicago.org to learn about upcoming training.

Sacristan

Behind the scenes, everything flows through you.

Sacristans prepare the altar, vessels, and environment for Mass and help ensure everything runs smoothly. Currently Sacristan is an adult role, but we are building a future pathway: Altar Server → Senior Server → Sacristan

This is a wonderful leadership opportunity for those who love the details and the sacred rhythm of the liturgy.

I’m Interested. Contact the Parish Office at (847) 979-0901 or sgoranson@archchicago.org to learn about upcoming training.

Art & Environment

Bring beauty to our worship space.

If you love flowers, color, design, or simply creating beauty, this ministry is for you.

Help decorate our churches throughout the liturgical seasons and learn how our environment reflects the rhythms of the Church year. If you can’t help year round, additional hands are always appreciated during the busiest times of the year at Christmas and Holy Week.

Great for students and adults alike.

Music Ministry

Lead others in prayer through song.

Music lifts hearts and brings our prayer to life. There are many ways to get involved:

Cantors & Accompanists. Lead sung prayer at Sunday and Holy Day liturgies.

Kids Choir (Grades 2–8). A fun and faith-filled way for students to grow in confidence and lead prayer.

  • Rehearses Wednesday afternoons
  • Sings monthly + special liturgies (Christmas, Advent, Sacraments)

Adult Choir. Leads music at special liturgies including:

  • Advent Lessons & Carols
  • Christmas Midnight Mass
  • Holy Week (Seven Last Words)
  • Occasional Sunday Liturgies

Rehearses primarily Thursday evenings.

I’m Interested. Contact our Director of Music, Paul Van Lysebettens, at (847) 979-0901 x1006 or pvanlysebettens@archchicago.org to be connected with our Art & Environment Ministry.

Hospitality

Set the tone from the moment someone walks in.

A smile. A welcome. A simple “hello.” Greeters and ushers do more than assist, they help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels they belong.

From taking up the offertory to answering questions, this ministry is all about hospitality.

And remember: You never know how your smile might change someone’s day.

Why It Matters

These ministries don’t just “help Mass happen.” They:

  • create a prayerful environment
  • invite people into deeper participation
  • make others feel seen, welcomed, and at home here at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish

Together, they help transform the Mass from something we attend…into something we truly experience.

Take the First Step

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just start.

We’ll help you find your place here at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, and grow from there.
